Stony Brook University and UMass Lowell Partner with U.S. Navy to Advance Energy Resilience Research
Researchers at Stony Brook University and the University of Massachusetts Lowell are partnering with the U.S. Department of the Navy to develop innovative technologies that will strengthen energy resilience for naval operations on land and at sea.
Supported by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), the collaboration is focused on creating secure, reliable energy systems that can continue powering mission-critical operations during disruptions such as severe weather, cyberattacks, and fuel supply interruptions. Most recently, ONR awarded the two universities a $6.3 million grant to advance across four focus areas:
- Power Grid Management
- Structural Health Monitoring
- Energy Storage and Advanced Materials
- Fuels and Power Systems
Together, these projects seek to ensure that energy systems remain operational even during emergencies or disruptions, helping the Navy maintain mission readiness under challenging conditions.
Researchers are also working closely with industry partners, including National Grid, PSEG Long Island, and the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), to help translate new technologies into practical energy solutions.
